Our Story
"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to keep all that I commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:18-20
In February 2015, several families who had been profoundly changed by the ministries of another vertically focused church began praying for a new, God-glorifying church where people could encounter His presence and experience intentional discipleship. Their burden was to plant in the Southeast—near the coast, in a growing city where multitudes did not yet know Christ. After seeking the Lord’s direction, they relocated to Charleston to establish a new life-giving church. By His grace, Vertical Church Charleston launched on January 10, 2016.
Since that day, our passion has been to glorify God by making disciples—seeing the lost saved, believers walking with Christ, and His people equipped to make disciples for the glory of His great name

Our Elders
Joe Mulroney
Lead Pastor
Joe Mulroney is living evidence of God’s grace. Raised in a non-Christian home marked by addiction, he experienced the transforming power of the gospel when he placed his trust in Jesus as Lord and Savior in 1997.
Together with his wife, Dawn, Joe has always shared a deep love for God’s Word and Christ’s church. After years of ministry in Florida and Tennessee, they moved their family to Charleston in 2015 to plant Vertical Church Charleston, a church committed to seeing lives changed and disciples made through the power of the gospel.
Joe and Dawn are grateful parents of four grown children and delighted grandparents of three. Joe counts it a joy to shepherd God’s people and to see the name of Jesus lifted high in Charleston and beyond. His story continues to remind him and all of us that God saves, equips, and sends for His glory.
Jeff McCain
Elder
Jeff McCain is a testimony of God’s mercy and grace. Though he grew up in a Christian home and even served in ministry, pride and hidden sin led him into years of brokenness that nearly destroyed his marriage. For a season, he walked away from church altogether and tried to numb his guilt through drinking, only to find emptiness at every turn.
Everything changed when Jeff finally came to the end of himself and surrendered his life to Jesus—not just in words, but in true repentance and faith. The Lord restored his marriage, freed him from destructive habits, and gave him a deep passion for discipleship and life in community with God’s people.
Jeff and his wife, Amanda, live in Ladson with their two sons. He loves walking alongside others in small group ministry and helping people grow in their walk with Christ. His story continues to remind him and all of us that no sin is greater than God’s grace, and that Jesus transforms lives for His glory.
